What is my role as a Medical Coder?

In Healthcare Industry, several roles are involved to run the process. 
Patient visits hospital for treatment.
Doctor along with the hospital team like Residents, Physician Assistant, Nurses, Technicians are involved in the patient care and treatment.
The entire treatment process is documented in an Electronic Medical Record.
Medical Coder reviews medical record to assign diagnostic & procedure codes. For instance, if a patient got injured with a laceration/cut and gets treated with laceration repair with sutures and pain killers in Emergency Room, the entire incident should be reviewed from chief complaint, past medical/surgical history, allergies, review of systems, physical examination, final assessment, treatment and plan. As a coder, you will assign diagnostic code (ICD-10-CM) for laceration and procedure code (CPT) for laceration repair. Please note that there is a lot of learning, and coding is required to be compliant and accurate to process a claim. 
Medical Billers utilize these codes for claim submission to insurance companies for final settlement (reimbursement).

There are two types of members considering certification before or after joining a company;
Some members with good command in Anatomy, Medicine, with/without coding guidlines can help them to succeed a job. Once they are comfortable coding the charts for 6 months to 1 year, they plan to write coding exams for CPC or CCS certification. There are chances of clearing exam only when the required topics of exam are practised at office and self. These members are secured by a job and only struggle to get certified.
Second type of members plan to clear CPC or CCS examination before applying a job. It's a wise decision as time and work pressure may not favor writing exam later. This can be achieved by systematic study plan to attain coding knowlege for certification. Their salary package is 20-30% more than non-certified coders. Some clients insist to take certified coders in their project. These members await for a good opportunity to get hired.
In a nutshell, certification without right knowlege doesn't pave to success, cannot withstand in the market.
